Sailing in the Mediterranean: Greece or Croatia

What could be a better way to leave your office in a rainy city behind than a sailing holiday around the Mediterranean?

Getting up in less-than-favourable British weather conditions at an early hour to embark on a commute in stuffy traffic jams isn't the most exciting way to spend your days. But chartering your own yacht and sailing the Mediterranean is the complete opposite to your regular nine-to-five.

Imagine waking up and stepping out on to a deck surrounded by glorious sunshine, crystal-clear waters and stunning scenery. Forget the usual working day, as having your own yacht holiday means you can do what you want when you want.

So, whether you fancy jumping off the vessel - when it is safe to do so, of course - and having a dip in the ocean, reading a book while sunbathing or hoisting up the sails to discover a different corner of the Mediterranean, you can be sure that your usual worries are left far behind in the grey skies and rain!

On a sailing holiday, you can forget about some of the typical problems you may encounter when spending a week or two at a hotel. There is unlikely to be any noisy neighbours disturbing your peace when sailing out into the expanse of the beautiful sea on a yacht.

The race for space in the swimming pool and the early-morning dash for a sun bed will also be a thing of the past. You will have plenty of space on the deck for lying back in the warm rays and topping up your tan. And because the boat will only be filled with your friends and family, there is no need to worry about getting along with those in the room next door.

One of the most scenic parts of the world to explore is the Mediterranean and Greece is a popular country for Brits to escape to when in need of some sun. A sailing holiday in Greece can be the perfect remedy to the everyday stresses of train delays, missed lunch breaks and who's turn it is to do the washing up.

Greece is known for many things, such as its friendly locals, gorgeous local dishes like moussaka and lamb kleftiko - and of course, its endless sun!

Why not hop between the picturesque fishing villages of the Ionian and enjoy some tasty food and a cool drink at local tavernas? Here the waters are calm and so a relaxing cruise can be had by all.

Or you can take in the history of Athens and explore a few of the many archaeological sites in this area. The famous Acropolis is comprised of plenty of sights to see, including the gateway of Propylaea.

If you want to leave your yacht to explore golden, sandy and secluded beaches then discovering what Milina holds could be perfect for you and your family and friends. Explore hidden coves amid stunning mountain backdrops - with the comfort of your yacht to hand should you need to grab some more sunscreen or some bottled water to keep hydrated.

Another sun-drenched country in the Mediterranean is Croatia. The Adriatic coast is packed with a plethora of islands to discover, meaning a sailing holiday in Croatia will provide something for everyone onboard a yacht.

Dubrovnik is one of the historically and culturally-packed cities that you might like to get to know better. The Old Town of this city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and should not be missed if you are sailing near this part of Croatia.

Here you can take a leisurely stroll along the walls, stopping off for a refreshing glass of local beer as you take in the sparkling sea and beautiful buildings. If you like religious architecture then why not check out the city's cathedral, which dates back to 1673? There is also the Baroque Church of St Blaise, which contains the city's patron saint in silver at the altar.

You may also like to set sail from Pula, which is the ideal base from which to discover the deserted islands of Silba, Cres and Krk. Soak up the sun and enjoy the peace and quiet that chartering your own yacht can deliver.

Another perfect location for a sailing holiday in Croatia is Kremik. Take in forests, waterfalls, mountains and some of the other spectacular sights. The oceanfront eateries that line this destination can provide the perfect end to the day after relaxing in the sunshine on your own private yacht.

So if you are stuck in the office and fancy getting a tan, a sailing holiday in the Mediterranean could be perfect for you.
