I Wish I Was There Instead... Cartagena

iWantSun.co.uk talks with Oliver Ortiz from My Destination, a network of online travel guides, about one of his favourite cities – Cartagena in Colombia.

So where would you rather be?
Cartagena, in the north coast of Colombia, facing the Caribbean Sea.

What’s all the fuss about?
Cartagena is a stunningly beautiful city on the coast, with a strong military theme. The city’s colonial walled fortresses and port were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and boast wonderful and varied architecture. The architectural styles are mainly colonial, however you will also see Republican and Italian style buildings too. Sometimes they are so colourful, they can look like a bowl of bright fruit. Add this to the sand, sea and energetic Colombian nightlife, and you’ll see what a great city Cartagena really is.

Keep talking...
The city has beautiful beaches too, and being so near to the equator you can enjoy really hot weather all year round. The average temperature stays above a sweltering 30°C. However, if you want to see truly amazing beaches you can catch a small yacht for a reasonably small cost to nearby islands such as La Isla de Baru. Here, you will discover stunning golden beaches with crystal water and delicious seafood; this is where I had the crispiest and freshest fish of my whole life! It’s truly like paradise on earth and what’s more, it can all be done with a relatively small budget too. And if you want a good night out, then Colombians really know how to party. Hit the clubs where you can dance to Latino beats with the friendly and beautiful locals.

If you could describe the place in three words, what would they be?
Historic, Colourful, Hot

If there's only one thing I should do while I'm there, what is it?
Visit the Fortress de San Felipe de Barajas, which overlooks the beautiful Caribbean sea. There you will gain an insight into Cartagena’s Spanish colonial past. This immense structure was strategically built on top of a hill to defend the city and treasures from enemy attack. Although, if history is not your thing, then you must definitely check out La Isla de Baru. With interesting history, stunning beaches, sun, and great nightlife all in one place, this is a truly absorbing city.

It sounds inspiring, I'll be sure to pack my swimsuit and my dancing shoes.
